NOTE ABOUT NDAs:

New desk Accessories are supported by this program.
They are, however, only available when a race IS NOT in
progress. In other words, you can invoke an NDA only when
you are pausing and when the game is over.

This game makes DIRECT WRITES to screen memory at
locations $E12000-$E19FFF. This was done in order to get the
fastest speed possible. (The QuickDraw shape drawing tools
were simply too slow!) Due to this reason, the program will
write over the windows of NDAs. The NDAs WILL (and should)
run without any problems although their windows are going to
be drawn over.

If you find any urgent need to use an NDA within the
program, position its window on the road area of the screen.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
-------------------

To execute this program you will need an Apple (R) IIGS with
at least 512k RAM.

FILES NEEDED:
------------

You should have the following files:
     - F1.RACE
     - RACE.DOC
     - RACE.EXPLODE7

SET-UP:
------

You should place the files "F1.RACE" and "RACE.EXPLODE7" in
the same directory. It doesn't matter where or how deep they
are, as long as both files are in the same folder.

TO EXECUTE:
----------

Use the Finder or the GS Launcher to execute the file
F1.RACE.

THE SCREEN:
----------

The screen will consist of a rendition of a race track on
the left half and the front panel of your car on the right
half. Some data regarding the current race are displayed
right under the front panel on the right side of the screen.

On the front panel, you have your speedometer on the left
and your fuel gauge on the right. Under the gauges is the
total distance you have travelled in the race.

Under the panel are three words with LED displays next to
them. Here's what they mean:

TIME - amount of time you have left in a leg.
DIST - the distance you have travelled in a leg.
MIN - the minimum distance you have to travel in
a leg.

THE GAME:
--------

In this game, you will be racing against the clock. You must
travel a set minimum distance within a set time before you
can move on to the next leg of the race. (Looking at your
front panel, you need to travel AT LEAST min miles in order
to finish the leg.) If you do not make it the game ends.

Remember, driving the necessary distance IS NOT all you have
to do to move on to the next leg. Once you have travelled
the minimum number of miles, you have to continue driving
until the clock runs down. Only then will you move on to the
next leg. If you crash and run out of cars before the clock
runs down (even if you have gone the minimum distance) the
game ends!

You start the race with five cars at your disposal. Each
time you crash, you are given a new car (as long as you have
remaining ones) and given a full tank of gas.

You will notice that on your front panel, you have a fuel
gauge. You start the race with a full tank of gas but
depending on how fast you are running, you will soon run
out. Every now and then, a "Gas Pump" will run down the
road. "Crash" into the pump if you need gas but avoid it if
you don't. When your fuel level drops to a certain level, a
warning sound will come on to remind you to fill-up.

     - when you choose to get some gas (by crashing into
the pump), you will lose 5 seconds for the pit stop.

     - you get around 7 gallons of fuel each time you "catch
       a pump".

When you run out of fuel and you have at least one more car
left, one of your extra cars will be taken in place of a
full tank. If you do not have any extra cars, the game ends.

In the middle of a race, you can pause or make a pit-stop by
pressing the space bar. This will stop the race and make the
menus active. You can then make any selection from the
menus. Simply press the Space bar again to re-enter the
race. Remember, when you re-enter the race, your speed will
go back to zero.

THE CONTROLS:
------------

The controls are simple:
Steer your car by moving the mouse left or right.
Accelerate by pressing the mouse button. Your speed will
remain constant when you release the mouse button. You can
slow down (brake) by holding the Open-Apple key down.

     In other words:

     STEERING - mouse
     GAS - mouse button
     BRAKE - Open-Apple key

BONUS:
-----

You get an extra car for each leg that you finish.

HINTS:
-----
   - do not go around grabbing all the fuel you can get.
Remember that you lose time whenever you re-fuel. Only get
some when you really need it. Try to avoid them otherwise.

   - when you have travelled the miminum distance necessary
to finish a leg, spend the extra time "filling-up". You can
drive slower (thus using up less fuel) and "catch" every
fuel pump that comes by. Then, when the next leg starts, you
have a full tank of gas!

   - if you do not want to spend the extra time filling-up
with fuel, you can use it instead to "rack-up" mileage. But
you're going to have to get some fuel some time!
